Last weekend, I found myself down in eastern Tennessee, celebrating my 10-year anniversary with my partner and exploring the South-Central Appalachian region. I’d been to Nashville a few times before, but never to eastern Tennessee, or nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains.

We spent our time between Knoxville, Gatlinburg, Dollywood, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, entrenched in the mountain fog and natural beauty. There is a portion of my brain that needs rewiring whenever I’m in the South – I need to turn the acquired New York-brusqueness off manually for a while.

Not only do trips like this give me a chance to be overall friendlier with those around me, but they require a slowing down altogether; I walk more slowly, I take in my surroundings with more of a measured glance, and I can let things move around me, instead of the opposite.

Located very near the Knoxville/Great Smoky Mountains area I just visited, the Tri-Cities DMA is unique, with regard to its placement along state lines. This DMA finds itself tucked among 3 different states: eastern Tennessee, southeastern Kentucky, and western Virginia.

Within the DMA, of the roughly 788,000 residents:

• 2 in 3 have been to a Quick Service Restaurant in the last 30 days
• Over 1 in 4 plan to make home improvements in the next year
• 17% have been fishing in the last 12 months, and 13% have been camping
• Over 25% plan to take a family vacation in the next year
