Is it a bridge? Is it a tunnel? Well, I suppose it’s both! Running northeast out of Norfolk, you’ll find the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a truly unique feat of engineering. A majority of this 17-mile roadway serves as a bridge, connecting Norfolk to Virginia’s Eastern Shore on the way up to Maryland. However, the bridge actually dips below the water twice, transitioning to a tunnel, which allows boats to pass through the channel as well. The bridge was named “One of Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World” in 1965.

Two famous cultural landmarks are the city’s Attucks Theatre and Wells Theatre. The Attucks Theatre is the oldest African-American theater in the US, while the Wells Theatre has hosted many famous names like Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald.
