For today’s GeekOUT Fast Fact, let’s take a look at the market home to the second largest city in Washington – the Spokane DMA.

Spokane is the 99th largest city in the US, and has a long and fascinating history. In the summer of 1889, the “Great Spokane Fire” destroyed much of the city’s downtown, though the cause of the fire was never determined. In fact, it was one of 3 “Great Fires” that happened in Washington state that very summer, with Seattle and Ellensburg being the other cities affected. The Great Spokane Fire led to a building boom, which helped shape the city’s architecture and culture.

Did you know that Spokane is home to the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world? The annual Spokane Hoopfest has led to the city adoption of the nickname “Hooptown USA”. Spokane is also the birthplace of Father’s Day in the US, lending to another nickname – Lilac City.
Let’s take a look at some specifics about the OOH media in this market.

According to Geopath Insights, there are more than 1,700 spots measured by Geopath within the Spokane market, which generate over 96 million impressions each week! Additionally, with a population of 1.3 million, and over 1/4 of all commuting trips within the DMA taking 30 minutes or more, it is clear why advertisers are taking advantage of OOH in the market.

Next, let’s look at who is spending in OOH within the DMA for Q2 of 2021.

Interestingly, several casinos fall into the top OOH spenders in this market. There are a good number of casinos in the Spokane area, so it’s not surprising to see a few as top spenders here. In addition, multiple credit unions and health services can also be found among the top OOH spenders. As with many markets, major national brands like McDonald’s, Geico, and Toyota also find themselves in the top spenders in Spokane.
